You’ve moved into a new house and you are excited to expand the gardens. You’ve chosen a perfect spot under a gorgeous, stately, old tree. The plants are in the ground and they look beautiful…until they don’t. Maybe they’re wilting despite your best watering, the leaves are starting to yellow, and they just aren’t taking off like you’d hoped. What’s going on here? If that gorgeous, stately, old tree is a black walnut, you are most likely running into an issue with walnut toxicity. While the trees are beautiful, they produce a substance called juglone. This substance is toxic to a number of plants causing them to have stunted, unimpressive growth that often results in death. Juglone is at its worst in the area around the tree called the drip line. The drip line is the area directly underneath the tree’s canopy (the shaded area under the tree at noon). Highly sensitive plants can still have trouble up to 60 feet away from the truck. Choose plants resistant to walnut toxicity for a beautiful garden you can enjoy!
